Nurturing the Soul Through Faith, Modesty, and Mercy
Self-love in Islam is not about arrogance, ego, or following desires. It is about understanding the honor that Allah (SWT) has given you. In the Qur’an, Allah says: “We have certainly honored the children of Adam“(17:70). This honor is not because of wealth, beauty, or people’s opinions, it is because Allah created you as a servant of Him, chosen to worship Him, chosen to walk the path of Islam. To love yourself is to respect the soul, Allah entrusted you with. It means protecting your salah, because prayer is the nourishment of your soul. It means guarding your modesty, because Haya (حیا) is your shield and your beauty in the sight of Allah. It means protecting your heart from sin, because your heart is the place where Iman lives.
Loving yourself the Islamic way means forgiving yourself when you fall, making sincere Tauwbah (توبہ), and believing that Allah’s mercy is greater than your mistakes. The Prophet said: All the children of Adam are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who repent. This is self-love: valuing your heart enough to return to Allah every time you slip. True self-love is when you say: ‘Ya Allah, help me become who You love.’ And when you live like this, you will never feel worthless, because you know: Allah created you with purpose, with dignity, and with a beauty that the dunya can never define.
